50 Euros (The Blue Bird)

The 2008 50 Euro coin, issued by the Belgian Royal Mint, serves as a numismatic tribute to Maurice Maeterlinck's celebrated play, The Blue Bird. Issued in the context of a series honoring Belgian literature and cultural heritage, the coin commemorates the centenary period surrounding the play's 1908 premiere in Moscow. It was designed to capture the allegorical essence of the work, which follows the children Tyltyl and Mytyl on their symbolic quest for happiness, represented by the elusive blue bird.

The design of the coin features an intricate artistic rendering of the titular bird, crafted to reflect the whimsical yet philosophical nature of Maeterlinck's narrative. Struck in gold, the piece was produced as a high-value collector's item rather than for circulation, appealing to enthusiasts of Symbolist literature and fine numismatics. It was well-received upon release for its cultural significance and the meticulous craftsmanship typical of Belgian commemorative coinage.
