Where it came from
The 2.5 euro coin celebrating the 100th anniversary of the maillot jaune, or yellow jersey, was issued by the Belgian Royal Mint in 2019. It commemorates the centennial of the jersey's introduction in the Tour de France, which serves as the iconic symbol for the race leader. Belgium holds a deep historical connection to the sport, and this issue honors the country's prominent role in cycling heritage.
Designed by the mint’s creative team, the coin features a stylized cyclist mid-climb, emphasizing the physical exertion and the prestige associated with the yellow jersey. The design captures the essence of the grand tour while adhering to the specific aesthetic standards of Belgian numismatic commemoratives. It was released primarily for collectors as part of a broader series celebrating national and international sporting milestones.
