2 Euros (Republic of Austria)

The 2 euro coin issued by the Republic of Austria in 2018 is part of the standard circulating series that reflects the nation's integration into the Eurozone. While commemorative 2 euro coins often feature elaborate designs for specific events, the standard issue maintains a consistent design language established when Austria adopted the currency in 2002. This specific year represents a continuation of the common European reverse side combined with the established Austrian obverse.

The obverse design, featuring the portrait of Bertha von Suttner, was created by the Austrian designer Josef Kaiser. Chosen to represent a prominent historical figure, von Suttner was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Kaiser's design intends to honor her dedication to pacifism, blending institutional prestige with a tribute to Austrian intellectual history. Upon its introduction, the coin was well-received for its clear representation of national identity within the broader context of the European Union.
