25 Dollars - Elizabeth II (Maetel)

The 2013 Cook Islands 25 Dollars coin featuring Maetel was minted as a numismatic tribute to the iconic character from Leiji Matsumoto's seminal manga and anime series, Galaxy Express 999. Issued by the Cook Islands, this coin forms part of a broader series celebrating Japanese pop culture icons, reflecting the intersection of traditional minting techniques and modern aesthetic sensibilities. The coin was produced to appeal to both collectors of commemorative currency and dedicated fans of Matsumoto's work, providing a tangible artifact of the science fiction genre that gained immense popularity in the late 1970s.

The design showcases a detailed, stylized rendering of Maetel, the mysterious and melancholic guide from the series, emphasizing the dramatic, flowing aesthetic that defines Matsumoto's character illustrations. By utilizing high-quality relief work, the coin captures the somber elegance of the character, a signature element of the Galaxy Express 999 narrative. Upon its release, the piece was received as a novel collector's item within the niche market of character-themed legal tender, serving as a distinct departure from traditional national heraldry or historical commemoration.
