Where it came from
The 3 Euro Styracosaurus coin was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2021 as the seventh entry in the 'Supersaurus' series, a collection dedicated to prehistoric life. These coins are minted using a special color-printing technique that allows the dinosaur illustrations to glow in the dark, a feature that has made the series popular among both numismatists and paleontology enthusiasts. The design was conceived to celebrate the rich fossil history of the regions that now comprise Austria and neighboring areas, capturing the imaginative appeal of dinosaurs for a younger generation of collectors.
The artistic direction for this series is handled by the Austrian Mint’s design team, who work to balance historical accuracy with a vibrant, modern aesthetic. The Styracosaurus, known for its distinct frill and long nasal horn, is rendered in high relief against a detailed landscape. Upon its release, the coin was well received for its technical innovation, specifically the integration of photo-luminescent pigments on a legal tender coin, effectively blending traditional minting craftsmanship with engaging visual technology.
