Where it came from
The 2012 '10 Years of Euro Cash' commemorative coin was issued by Austria to mark the tenth anniversary of the physical introduction of the euro as legal tender in 2002. This commemorative issue was part of a coordinated release across all nineteen eurozone member states, featuring a standardized design selected by the public through an online competition hosted by the European Commission.
The winning design, created by Helmut Andexlinger of the Austrian Mint, features a central globe surrounded by motifs representing various facets of European life. The surrounding symbols—including a bridge, a ship, a factory, and a family—were intended to represent the economic and social integration brought about by the currency. It was received as a significant milestone in European monetary history, symbolizing the transition from national currencies to a unified financial identity.
