All Star Western #19

All Star Western #19 was published by DC Comics in 1973 as part of the Bronze Age of comic books. During this period, the western genre was seeing a decline in popularity compared to superheroes, leading DC to utilize the title as a platform for the gritty, supernatural-tinged adventures of Jonah Hex. The issue features a story crafted during a time when creators were increasingly pushing the boundaries of moral ambiguity in serialized storytelling.

The character of Jonah Hex, central to this run, was co-created by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga. Their goal was to move away from the traditional, heroic cowboy archetype, introducing a scarred, anti-heroic protagonist who operated within a cynical version of the Old West. The design and narrative tone were well-received by readers seeking darker, more complex character studies, cementing Hex as a persistent figure in the DC mythos.
