Where it came from
Alpha Flight #106, published in March 1992, is a landmark issue within the Marvel Comics canon, written by Scott Lobdell with interior art by Dale Eaglesham. The issue is historically significant for its decision to reveal the character Northstar as a gay man, a moment that garnered considerable attention and media coverage at the time as one of the first explicit acknowledgments of a superhero's homosexuality in mainstream comics.
The creative intent behind the reveal was to provide depth to Northstar's backstory, addressing his famously abrasive personality as a byproduct of his long-held secret. While the comic industry was beginning to show interest in more diverse characterizations, the editorial approval for this specific storyline was a noteworthy departure from Marvel's traditional constraints, setting a precedent for future explorations of LGBTQ+ themes within the publisher's serialized narratives.
