Where it came from
Alpha Flight #1 was published in August 1983, serving as the debut of Canada's premiere superhero team within the Marvel Universe. The group had previously appeared as a recurring antagonist force in the pages of The Uncanny X-Men, where they were established as a government-sanctioned team tasked with tracking down Wolverine. Due to their popularity, Marvel greenlit a solo title to explore their origins and individual dynamics.
The series was created, written, and illustrated by John Byrne, who had been a driving force behind the characters' development during his tenure on The X-Men. Byrne aimed to craft a distinct identity for the team that reflected their Canadian heritage, focusing on a diverse lineup including Sasquatch, Aurora, Northstar, and Shaman. The premiere issue was met with significant anticipation, quickly becoming one of the most successful new titles of the era due to Byrne's established creative reputation and the novelty of a Canadian-centered superhero narrative.
