Four Color #1040

Four Color issue 1040, published in 1959 by Dell Comics, is a notable entry in a long-running anthology series that served as a testing ground for potential ongoing titles. During this era, Dell operated under a unique licensing agreement with Western Publishing, focusing on family-friendly content that avoided the harsher narratives found in many competitors of the time. This specific issue features a licensed adaptation of the animated series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, capturing the quirky, meta-humor that defined Jay Ward’s creations.

The art and editorial direction of this period reflected the clean, accessible aesthetic preferred by Dell to appeal to a broad demographic of young readers. Because these comics were produced as single-shot issues before a series was guaranteed, they were often treated as promotional vehicles for popular television properties. The reception was generally favorable among the youth market, though collectors today value these issues primarily as snapshots of mid-century television history and as examples of the transition toward more character-driven, comedic comic book storytelling.
