Where it came from
Released by Marvel Comics in 1982, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #1 marked the beginning of a cross-promotional juggernaut between Hasbro and the comic publisher. The series was commissioned to provide a narrative backbone for Hasbro's relaunched 3.75-inch action figure line. Writer Larry Hama was tasked with turning a collection of disparate military toys into a cohesive team, drawing heavily on his own experiences in the U.S. Army to ground the characters in a believable, tactical reality.
The debut issue was illustrated by Herb Trimpe, a veteran artist known for his long run on The Incredible Hulk. Trimpe's work focused on clear, kinetic action sequences that defined the aesthetic of the series. The comic was well-received upon its arrival, successfully bridging the gap between the toy shelf and the printed page, eventually running for 155 issues and establishing the long-standing lore of the G.I. Joe versus Cobra conflict.
