Where it came from
Released in 1983 as part of Marvel Comics' long-running G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series, this issue was scripted by Larry Hama and illustrated by Herb Trimpe. The series was developed as a multimedia tie-in to Hasbro's relaunch of the G.I. Joe action figure line, with Hama tasked by editor Jim Shooter to build a cohesive lore for the characters. This issue is notable for its role in establishing the intricate team dynamics and strategic warfare scenarios that became a hallmark of Hama's legendary fifteen-year tenure on the title.
The creative direction for the series focused on grounded, military-inspired storytelling that stood out from the more fantastical superhero comics of the era. By providing detailed dossiers and character development for every figure in the toy line, Hama transformed the property into a critical and commercial success. Issue #12 contributed to this legacy by refining the ongoing conflict between the G.I. Joe team and the Cobra organization, cementing the series' reputation for serialized narratives that rewarded attentive, long-term readers.
