Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu #10

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu represents a definitive collected edition of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work, Kamui-Den. Originally serialized beginning in 1964 in the alternative manga magazine Garo, the series offered a complex, Marxist-inflected critique of Edo-period class structures and feudal oppression. This specific ketteiban, or definitive edition, was produced to preserve the sprawling narrative scope of the original run for modern readers, ensuring the intricate character studies and political themes remained accessible to later generations.

The aesthetic of Kamui-Den is defined by Shirato’s stark, gritty linework, which reflects the harsh realities of the ninja life and the sociopolitical turbulence of the era. The series is celebrated for its commitment to historical research and its rejection of traditional heroism in favor of a nuanced examination of systemic survival. Upon its original release, the work was received as a landmark of adult-oriented manga, significantly influencing the trajectory of gekiga and establishing a high-water mark for the medium’s potential to engage with serious historical discourse.
