Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu #12

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū is a definitive archival release of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work, Kamui-Den. Originally serialized in the groundbreaking manga magazine Garo beginning in 1964, the series revolutionized the medium by blending intricate historical research with a brutal, philosophical examination of Edo-period class struggle. This specific Zenshū, or complete collection, was published to preserve the original narrative scope of the First Part, which follows the life of the runaway ninja Kamui as he traverses a rigid, oppressive feudal society.

The editorial design of the Ketteiban edition prioritizes fidelity to Shirato’s stark, high-contrast aesthetic and complex panel layouts. As a creator, Shirato was deeply influenced by his upbringing and involvement in social activism, aiming to use the ninja genre as a vehicle for historical materialism rather than mere escapism. This series is widely regarded as a cornerstone of Japanese counterculture literature, and this specific re-release was received by critics as an essential effort to maintain the accessibility of one of the most influential manga series of the 20th century.
