Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu #13

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Daiichibu represents the definitive collected edition of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work, Kamui-Den. Originally serialized in the groundbreaking manga magazine Garo beginning in 1964, the series redefined the medium by offering a stark, historical examination of caste oppression and class struggle during the Edo period. This specific edition was compiled to preserve Shirato's complex, woodblock-inspired aesthetic and dense narrative panels for a modern readership, serving as a comprehensive archival release of the first part of the epic.

The visual language of the series, characterized by visceral action and philosophical gravity, was deeply influenced by Shirato’s own background in radical politics. The design of these volumes emphasizes the raw intensity of his ink work, stripping away color to focus on the stark contrast and gritty detail that established the aesthetic standard for the gekiga genre. While the original serialization was a cornerstone of 1960s Japanese counterculture, these collected volumes are now highly regarded by scholars and enthusiasts as a vital historical document of the evolution of manga as a medium for serious social commentary.
