Where it came from
Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū is a definitive collection of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga work, Kamui-Den. First serialized in the monthly magazine Garo starting in 1964, the original manga was a complex, multi-layered epic exploring class struggle, feudal caste systems, and political revolution in Edo-period Japan. These definitive collections were produced to preserve and present the exhaustive scope of Shirato's research and narrative ambition for new generations of readers.
The design of this specific set aims for a scholarly, archival feel, emphasizing the density of Shirato’s intricate linework and his stark, atmospheric depictions of the natural world. The series is celebrated for its deep historical grounding and the philosophical weight it brought to the medium of manga. Upon its various re-releases, it has been received as a foundational pillar of Japanese literature, praised for its uncompromising narrative structure and influence on the evolution of the gekiga genre.
