Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Dainibu #5

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Dainibu represents the definitive collected edition of Sanpei Shirato’s seminal gekiga epic, Kamui-Den. The series was originally serialized in the monthly magazine Garo beginning in 1964, providing a gritty, sociopolitical lens on the Edo period through the story of a runaway ninja. This specific reissue project was curated to preserve the intricate, stark linework and dense historical research that defined Shirato’s aesthetic, which heavily influenced the trajectory of alternative manga in Japan.

The design of this definitive edition emphasizes readability and archival quality, moving away from the ephemeral nature of the original magazine installments. Shirato’s narrative style, characterized by its focus on class struggle, systemic oppression, and feudal life, is presented here with high-fidelity reproduction. Upon its release, this edition was widely received as an essential cornerstone for collectors and historians of manga, cementing the series' legacy as one of the most influential works in the medium's history.
