Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Dainibu #8

Ketteiban, Kamui-Den Zenshū: Dainibu represents a definitive collected edition of Sanpei Shirato’s monumental gekiga series, Kamui-den. Originally serialized in the groundbreaking manga magazine Garo beginning in 1964, the series was a cornerstone of the alternative manga movement, exploring complex themes of feudal class struggle, social hierarchy, and political rebellion. The Ketteiban editions were designed to preserve the dense, intricate artistry of Shirato’s work, offering readers a high-quality format that respects the narrative depth of the second arc, or Dainibu.

The visual language of the series, characterized by stark shadows and kinetic, cinematic panelling, was crafted to reflect the harsh realities of Edo-period Japan. Sanpei Shirato, often assisted by his brother Tetsuji Okamoto, focused on a gritty, historically informed aesthetic that moved away from the more lighthearted styles popular in mainstream comics of the era. This specific edition was received by collectors and historians as a vital repository of 20th-century Japanese literary culture, valued for its commitment to maintaining the integrity of Shirato’s vision as a socio-political critique.
