Mahō Shōjo Kazumi☆Magica: The Innocent Malice #1

Mahō Shōjo Kazumi☆Magica: The Innocent Malice #1 debuted in 2011 as a manga spin-off of the widely acclaimed Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise. Published in Manga Time Kirara Forward, the series was written by Masaki Hiramatsu and illustrated by Takashi Tensugi, with original character designs provided by the creative group Magica Quartet. It was conceived to expand the dark, subverted magical girl universe established by the original anime, shifting the narrative focus to a new cast in the city of Asunaro.

The design of the series centers on a psychological exploration of the magical girl archetype, leaning into themes of identity and memory. While the original series was a direct response to the popularity of the 2011 Madoka Magica anime, Kazumi☆Magica was praised for its darker, more complex tone and its departure from the established protagonist of the mainline series. It remains a notable entry in the expanded franchise, reflecting the era's experimentation with deconstructionist storytelling in the seinen manga market.
