Where it came from
New Normal #5 is part of a self-published series of zines created by artist and illustrator Noah Butkus. Emerging from the independent underground comics and art scene, the series was designed to explore themes of surrealism, Americana, and fragmented cultural imagery through a distinct, hand-drawn aesthetic.
Butkus utilized the zine format to showcase a densely layered, collage-like approach to illustration that challenges traditional narrative structure. By favoring intimate, low-run print methods, the work sought to create a tactile connection with readers outside of mainstream publishing channels, eventually gaining recognition among enthusiasts of contemporary graphic arts for its technical precision and imaginative depth.
