Where it came from
Oltretomba was a prominent Italian horror comic series launched in the early 1970s, a period when the 'fumetti neri' genre was reaching its peak of popularity in Italy. This issue emerged during an era characterized by a fascination with the macabre, eroticism, and supernatural themes, catering to an adult readership that sought transgressive storytelling beyond traditional mainstream comics.
The series relied on a rotating cast of artists and writers to maintain a consistent output of unsettling content, typically featuring stylized black-and-white illustrations that emphasized atmospheric tension and grotesque imagery. Like many of its contemporary counterparts, it was designed as an affordable, pocket-sized periodical, intended for quick consumption and disposable entertainment, which often led to its contemporary status as a niche collectible for connoisseurs of cult international horror media.
