Oltretomba #14

Oltretomba was a prominent Italian horror comic series published by Edizioni ErreGì starting in the early 1970s. This series, along with its contemporaries like Terror and Vampirissimo, captured the peak of Italy's fumetti neri era, a genre defined by dark, transgressive narratives that explored macabre themes, erotica, and supernatural suspense. These pocket-sized comics were designed for mass-market newsstand distribution, intended to provide affordable, sensationalist entertainment to an adult readership that was increasingly drawn to transgressive pop culture.

The aesthetic of Oltretomba relied heavily on high-contrast black-and-white art, emphasizing moody ink work that suited the pulp format. Like many titles in this category, the series utilized a rotating roster of anonymous or pseudonym-using illustrators and writers, prioritizing the thematic cohesion of the horror genre over individual creative branding. Issue #14, like others in the run, functioned as a self-contained narrative experiment within the series' loose mythos, reflecting the era's fascination with classic gothic tropes reimagined through a modern, cynical lens that characterized the Italian counter-culture of the period.
