Oltretomba #12

Oltretomba was a prominent Italian horror comic series published by Edizioni ErreGì starting in the early 1970s. This series, along with others like Terror and Vampirissimo, emerged during the height of the Italian 'fumetti neri' movement, which explored dark, supernatural, and transgressive themes. Issue #12 was crafted to satisfy a growing audience for sensationalist pulp horror, blending gothic aesthetics with the raw, gritty visual style that characterized low-budget independent publishing of that era.

The visual design of these issues relied on atmospheric, often macabre cover illustrations intended to shock and entice readers from newsstands. While the authorship of individual issues was frequently shrouded in pseudonyms or collective studio efforts to maintain a consistent house style, the series was defined by its commitment to grotesque storytelling. Though initially viewed as disposable counter-culture literature, these comics are now appreciated by collectors as essential artifacts of the Italian creative subcultures that flourished outside the mainstream.
