Oltretomba #16

Oltretomba was a prominent Italian horror comic series published by Ediperiodici during the 1970s, a period when the 'fumetti neri' genre was reaching its peak of popularity in Italy. This series focused on macabre themes, gothic narratives, and supernatural horror, designed to capitalize on the public's fascination with pulp suspense. As a standalone issue, number 16 reflects the standard aesthetic of the series, which utilized high-contrast black-and-white ink illustrations to evoke an unsettling atmosphere.

The visual identity of Oltretomba was defined by a collective of house artists who prioritized shock value and stylized gore over traditional superhero tropes. These comics were intended for an adult audience seeking gritty escapism, and they were often sold at newsstands in a pocket-sized format for convenient reading. While the series was frequently scrutinized by moral critics of the era for its graphic content, it maintained a dedicated following among readers who appreciated its dedication to the darker side of Italian graphic fiction.
