Oltretomba #19

Oltretomba was a prominent Italian horror comic series published during the 1970s, a period when the 'fumetti neri' genre was reaching its peak of cultural influence. Issue #19, like its counterparts, served as a self-contained anthology of supernatural stories characterized by the provocative and dark aesthetic that defined the genre during this era. The series was designed to appeal to adult readers with a penchant for Gothic tales, blending elements of suspense, folklore, and visceral imagery that challenged the moral boundaries of contemporary Italian society.

The visual language of the Oltretomba series was largely driven by the house style of Edizioni ErreGì, focusing on high-contrast illustrations and grim narrative tropes. While individual artists frequently worked under house pseudonyms, the design intent consistently aimed to capture the visceral energy of classic horror cinema and pulp literature. Upon its release, the series faced scrutiny from conservative groups, yet it found a dedicated readership, cementing its status as a notable example of the subversive underground comics culture of the time.
