Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a prolific wave of Italian fumetti neri, or dark comics, that gained significant popularity throughout the 1970s. Published by Edizioni ErreGì, this series specialized in horror, gothic themes, and erotic suspense, mirroring the aesthetic sensibilities of iconic titles like Diabolik or Kriminal but with a focus on supernatural and grotesque narratives that catered to an adult readership seeking transgressive entertainment.
The design and illustration of these issues relied on the classic 'pocket' format, a signature of the era that emphasized portability and affordability. These comics were largely functional, produced rapidly to satisfy a high-volume market of newsstand kiosks. The cover art for issue #131 maintains the characteristic lurid, high-contrast style of the series, featuring the dramatic and often visceral imagery that served as the primary marketing tool to catch a reader’s eye among a crowded rack of competing pulps.
