Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a popular Italian line of pocket-sized horror comics, or fumetti neri, that flourished during the 1970s. Published by Edizioni ErreGi, the series capitalized on the era's fascination with macabre, erotic, and pulp-influenced storytelling, serving as a darker, anthology-style companion to the publisher's more mainstream horror titles.
The visual identity of these issues was defined by stark, high-contrast black-and-white illustrations that prioritized atmosphere and shock value. Artists working for the series often utilized a gritty, functional style suited for the mass-market newsstand format. Issue 125, like many in the run, functioned as a self-contained narrative designed to provide quick, sensationalist thrills to an audience seeking subversive escapism.
