Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a popular long-running Italian series of horror comics, or fumetti neri, that flourished during the 1970s and 1980s. These publications were designed to provide inexpensive, bite-sized macabre entertainment for a mass audience, often featuring a blend of supernatural thrills, eroticism, and dark irony that defined the genre during the period.
The visual identity of these issues was characterized by a distinct pulp aesthetic, often utilizing anonymous or house-style illustrations common among small Italian publishers of the era. The creators behind these works aimed to tap into the public appetite for gothic storytelling, resulting in a series that prioritized atmospheric tension and serialized narrative hooks over high-art production values.
