Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a long-running Italian horror comic series published by Edizioni ErreGì starting in the early 1970s. These comics were quintessential examples of the 'fumetti neri' or adult horror genre, characterized by lurid, monochromatic cover art and stories that leaned heavily into transgressive themes, gothic atmosphere, and supernatural tropes intended for an adult audience.
The series relied on a revolving door of anonymous or pseudonym-using illustrators and writers, a common practice in the Italian small-press industry of the era to keep production costs low and output high. Issue #162, like its peers, reflects the aesthetic of mid-seventies pulp fiction, prioritizing shock value and sensational imagery designed to grab readers from newsstand racks, a design philosophy that remains highly evocative for vintage collectors today.
