Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a broader Italian 'fumetti neri' or adult comic book landscape that flourished in the 1970s and 1980s. These publications were known for their horror-themed narratives, often blending supernatural elements with graphic violence and erotica. The 'Speciaal' sub-series served as an expanded format for the original Oltretomba title, offering longer stories and more elaborate cover art to satisfy the cult demand for dark, sensationalist pulp fiction.
The visual identity of this series was characterized by gritty, expressive line work and bold, often shocking compositions intended to grab the attention of readers at newsstands. The creators typically worked under pseudonyms or in small studios, focusing on themes of the occult and psychological thriller. Because these issues were printed on inexpensive paper and viewed as ephemeral entertainment, they were often discarded after reading, which has contributed to their status as sought-after artifacts among collectors of European underground comics.
