Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a long-running Italian horror and gothic comic series published by Edizioni ErreGi throughout the 1970s. These pocket-sized comics, known as 'fumetti neri,' capitalized on the era's fascination with the macabre, eroticism, and supernatural suspense, offering readers inexpensive, thrill-driven narratives that fit easily into a pocket or bag.
The visual identity of the Oltretomba series was defined by stark, high-contrast black-and-white ink work that prioritized atmosphere and intense emotional expression over anatomical realism. Issue #159 continues the tradition of anthology-style storytelling that characterizes the line, reflecting the pulp-publishing aesthetics common to the period and maintaining the series' reputation for blending stylized horror tropes with dark, often surreal graphic storytelling.
