Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a long-running Italian pocket-sized horror comic series published by Edizioni ErreGì starting in the early 1970s. These publications were characteristic of the fumetti neri genre, which flourished in Italy by blending supernatural themes, gothic horror, and provocative imagery within a compact format intended for newsstand distribution.
The series featured rotating creative teams tasked with producing high-output, low-cost serial entertainment that relied on dramatic covers and sensationalist narratives to stand out. Issue 157 reflects the aesthetic typical of this era, focusing on the dark, illustrative style common to Italian pulp horror comics of the late 1970s and early 1980s, serving as a snapshot of the period's interest in transgressive and macabre pop culture.
