Oltretomba Speciaal #42

Oltretomba Speciaal was a long-running Italian fumetti neri series published by Edizioni ErreGì beginning in the early 1970s. This series, along with its contemporaries, emerged during the height of the Italian horror comic boom, a period defined by low-budget, high-impact stories often featuring macabre themes, supernatural elements, and transgressive imagery intended for an adult audience.

The visual identity of the Oltretomba issues was heavily influenced by the gothic aesthetic popularized by characters like Diabolik and Kriminal. Issue #42, like many in the Speciaal run, reflects the house style of the era, which prioritized stark black-and-white ink work and dramatic, suspense-heavy cover illustrations. While the specific artists behind individual issues were frequently uncredited due to the rapid production cycles typical of the time, the series remains a quintessential example of the pulp horror culture that shaped European underground comics.
