Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a popular wave of Italian horror comics published during the 1970s, a period defined by the success of 'fumetti neri'. This series specifically acted as a dedicated showcase for macabre, erotic, and gothic-themed short stories, catering to an audience that sought out the dark, sensationalist pulp aesthetic that dominated Italian newsstands of the era.
The creative direction for these issues often relied on a revolving team of artists and writers working under tight deadlines, prioritizing atmosphere and grotesque imagery to satisfy the demands of the genre. Issue number 52 reflects the standard production format of the time, featuring stark black-and-white ink work intended to deliver visceral shocks to the reader, maintaining the consistent visual identity that characterized the wider Oltretomba brand throughout its long run.
