Where it came from
Oltretomba Speciaal was part of a prolific Italian fumetti neri series published by Edizioni ErreGì during the late 1960s and 1970s. These pocket-sized comics were designed to satisfy the massive appetite for dark, sensationalist horror and erotic thrillers that permeated Italian pulp culture at the time, operating within a highly competitive market of similar black-and-white newsstand comics.
The aesthetic of Oltretomba was defined by high-contrast ink work that favored gruesome, macabre imagery and unsettling narratives intended for an adult audience. The series relied on anonymous or pseudonymous creative teams to produce a rapid stream of stories, reflecting the utilitarian approach of the period's publishing houses where the emphasis was on maintaining a consistent, gritty visual tone rather than highlighting individual auteur credits.
