Our Fighting Forces #181

Our Fighting Forces #181 was published by DC Comics in 1978 as part of a long-running anthology series focused on war stories. By the mid-1970s, the title had become synonymous with Jack Kirby’s tenure as writer and artist, during which he introduced the gritty, high-stakes adventures of the Loser, a band of soldiers constantly finding themselves in impossible situations. This issue serves as a late-run installment that reflects the transition period of DC's war comics as they began to experiment with tone and character focus following Kirby's departure from the series.

The creative direction for this era of the series emphasized a balance between the realism of combat and the larger-than-life narrative style established by Kirby. The production of the issue followed standard industry practices for the time, utilizing a team of editors and creators tasked with maintaining the legacy of the war genre while responding to a shifting readership. As with many issues from this late stage of the series, the design and narrative arc were aimed at long-term collectors and fans of the specific internal continuity of the Losers' ongoing military campaigns.
