Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in 1977, Our Fighting Forces #173 serves as a significant entry in the series' later years, a period defined by the enduring popularity of the Demon in the DC war-comic landscape. Following the departure of Jack Kirby from the title, the book continued to explore gritty, character-driven narratives set against the backdrop of global conflict, maintaining the publisher's long-standing tradition of anthology-style military storytelling that had begun in the 1950s.
The creative direction for this era focused on balancing historical action with the evolving sensibilities of the Bronze Age of comic books. Writers and artists working on this issue aimed to preserve the high-stakes atmosphere established by their predecessors while navigating the shifting interests of contemporary readers, resulting in a distinct visual and tonal aesthetic that remains a notable example of late-seventies commercial comic production.
