Where it came from
Preacher #42, titled 'Ancient History: The Story of Jesse Custer', was published by Vertigo in 1998 as part of the acclaimed comic book series created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon. This specific issue functions as a standalone flashback narrative, offering critical insight into the background of the protagonist, Jesse Custer, and his complex family lineage. The series itself was notable for its dark, irreverent tone and its blend of supernatural elements with Southern Gothic themes.
Steve Dillon's clean, expressive linework became synonymous with the visual identity of Preacher, effectively balancing the grounded, gritty reality of rural Texas with the series' more grotesque and otherworldly inhabitants. Upon its release, the issue was well-received by fans and critics alike for its character depth, contributing to the overall narrative momentum of the saga. It stands as a testament to the collaborative creative partnership between Ennis and Dillon, which defined the mature, subversive aesthetic of the late 1990s Vertigo imprint.
