Secrets of Haunted House #40

Secrets of Haunted House was a long-running anthology horror series published by DC Comics during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Issue number 40, released in 1981, fits squarely within the late Bronze Age of comics, a period defined by the waning popularity of the Comics Code Authority's restrictive horror guidelines and a shift toward more sophisticated, often eerie storytelling tropes. These issues were designed to evoke a sense of atmospheric dread rather than graphic violence, serving as a spiritual successor to the classic suspense anthologies of the 1950s.

The design and illustration of this period were marked by a roster of talented artists who utilized dense, ink-heavy panels to establish a signature macabre aesthetic. While the stories were collaborative efforts involving various rotating writers and artists, the series was largely curated to maintain a cohesive 'haunted house' theme, often featuring a host or narrator to guide the reader. Reception at the time was favorable among fans of supernatural fiction, as the anthology format allowed for experimental visual styles that stood out against the standard superhero fare of the era.
