Strikeforce: Morituri #11

Strikeforce: Morituri #11 was published by Marvel Comics in 1987 as part of a science fiction series created by writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Brent Anderson. The series centers on a future where humanity, facing an alien invasion, develops a process to grant superhuman abilities to volunteers. However, this process carries a terminal cost: the recipients are guaranteed to die within a year of their transformation, a premise that allowed the creative team to explore themes of mortality, sacrifice, and the psychological weight of a looming expiration date.

The visual aesthetic of the series, shaped significantly by Anderson’s grounded, gritty illustration style, sought to emphasize the humanity of the characters amidst high-concept sci-fi action. By the eleventh issue, the title had established a cult following for its willingness to break away from standard superhero tropes by prioritizing internal character development and the inevitable tragedy inherent in the protagonists' lives. It remains a notable example of late-1980s experimental comic storytelling, celebrated for its dark tone and structural departure from the Marvel Universe's typical interconnected continuity.
