Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in 1974, The Incredible Hulk #181 stands as a pivotal moment in comic book history, primarily for marking the first full appearance of Wolverine. Created by writer Len Wein and art director John Romita Sr., with pencils by Herb Trimpe, the issue was conceived to introduce a fierce, Canadian-themed antagonist for the Hulk. The character design, featuring his signature retractable claws and mask, was finalized by Romita Sr. to give the new mutant a distinct, aggressive visual identity.
The issue was initially received as a standard installment in the long-running Incredible Hulk series, though it quickly gained status among fans due to the instant popularity of the Wolverine character. Herb Trimpe’s interior art and the iconic cover, which depicts the Hulk engaged in a skirmish with the new hero, have since become some of the most recognizable imagery in the medium. Over the decades, the book transitioned from a common newsstand purchase to a cornerstone of the bronze age of comics, highly sought after for its cultural impact on the Marvel Universe.
