Where it came from
The Occult Files of Dr. Spektor was published by Gold Key Comics starting in 1972, emerging during a period when the Comics Code Authority had loosened restrictions on supernatural subject matter. Created by writer Donald F. Glut and artist Dan Spiegle, the series focused on Adam Spektor, a paranormal investigator whose adventures navigated the tension between traditional folklore and the pulp-horror style characteristic of the era. Issue number 7, released in 1974, continues this exploration of the occult with the distinct, clean illustrative style that defined Gold Key’s house aesthetic.
Dan Spiegle’s contribution to the title is frequently cited for its professional clarity and dynamic storytelling, which helped elevate the book above standard B-movie horror adaptations. While the series was never as widely distributed as the superhero heavyweights of DC or Marvel, it cultivated a dedicated following among fans of supernatural investigative fiction. It remains a notable example of mid-1970s independent-leaning horror comics, praised by historians for its consistent creative direction and its role in keeping the genre relevant during a transitional decade for the medium.
