The Pink Panther #21

Released in the mid-1970s, The Pink Panther #21 was part of a long-running comic book series published by Gold Key Comics. This title was born from the immense popularity of the animated segments created by Friz Freleng and David DePatie for the opening and closing credits of the Blake Edwards film series. The comics sought to translate the silent, slapstick, and surreal visual humor of the character into a print medium that would appeal to younger readers who were captivated by the Saturday morning television broadcasts.

The art and storytelling in these issues typically adhered to the established aesthetic of the animated shorts, favoring pantomime and visual gags over dialogue. Artists working for Gold Key during this era often leaned into a clean, minimalist style that mirrored the simple lines of the character design. While the comics were generally viewed as supplemental material to the animated programs, they maintain a specific historical significance today as artifacts of 1970s pop culture tie-in merchandising, representing a time when animated properties were rapidly expanding into broader syndication.
