Where it came from
Published by Marvel Comics in 1985, The Vision and the Scarlet Witch #9 stands as a significant milestone in the history of mainstream superhero comics. Written by Steve Englehart with artwork by Richard Howell, the issue is best known for the birth of the characters' children, Tommy and Billy. This narrative development was a bold creative choice for the era, signaling a move toward more serialized, domestic character growth within the traditional superhero genre.
The issue is stylistically grounded in the mid-1980s Marvel aesthetic, balancing superhero action with the complex, often unconventional interpersonal drama of the Avengers. Richard Howell’s pencils provided a clean, expressive look that helped ground the surreal elements of Scarlet Witch’s reality-warping magic and the Vision’s synthetic nature. The issue remains highly regarded by collectors for its pivotal impact on the long-term continuity of the Marvel Universe and the lasting influence of these two characters.
