Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #101

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue number 101 was published in 1961 during the long-running Dell Comics series that brought the manic antics of the animated bird to the printed page. By this point in the series, the comics had established a stable format of short, humorous vignettes that mirrored the slapstick energy of the theatrical cartoons. The title was a staple of Dell's licensed character lineup, which sought to translate the popularity of cinematic animation into a format accessible to younger readers in the post-war era.

The character design for the comic version maintained the core visual hallmarks established by the Walter Lantz studio, focusing on Woody’s iconic tuft of red hair and expressive, wide-eyed look. The creative team at the time aimed to capture the character's mischievous spirit through a mix of fast-paced dialogue and visually driven gag sequences. These books were widely received as classic examples of mid-century children's entertainment, valued primarily for their ability to extend the reach of the Lantz animation brand to a mass-market comic audience.
