Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #102

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue 102 was published in the mid-1950s by Dell Comics as part of their long-running Four Color and subsequent solo title series. During this era, Dell held the license for Walter Lantz productions, translating the frantic, anarchic energy of the theatrical animated shorts into the more structured medium of comic books to reach a growing audience of children who were captivated by Saturday morning cartoons.

The character design for the comic book version was overseen by the artists at Western Publishing, who were tasked with adapting the visual shorthand of Lantz’s animators for print. While the comics often softened the character's more destructive tendencies compared to his early cinematic appearances, the illustrations maintained the iconic silhouette and mischievous spirit of the woodpecker. These issues were widely distributed through newsstands and drugstores, serving as a staple of mid-century American juvenile entertainment.
