Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #104

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue number 104 was published in 1961 as part of the long-running Dell Comics series. The comic was produced during a prolific era for the Walter Lantz studio, which sought to expand the reach of its popular animated theatrical characters into the printed medium. These issues were designed to mirror the frantic, slapstick energy of the cartoons, often featuring short, episodic adventures that relied on visual gags and the mischievous persona established by the character on screen.

The creative direction for these mid-century Dell comics often involved a rotating stable of studio artists and writers who prioritized accessibility for younger audiences. While the specific illustrator for this issue remains part of the general studio output of the era, the design language was consistent with the house style: bold, clear character linework paired with vibrant color palettes characteristic of late-period Dell production. It is regarded today as a nostalgic representative of the Golden Age of animation-based comic books, reflecting a time when theatrical shorts were synonymous with children's literature.
