Where it came from
Woody Woodpecker number 128 was published in 1965 as part of the long-running Western Publishing comic book series based on the Walter Lantz animated shorts. By this point in the series' history, the publication had transitioned through several publishers, including Dell and Gold Key, reflecting the broader mid-century effort to translate the chaotic energy of theatrical animation into the static, narrative-driven format of the monthly comic.
The stories within this issue were crafted by a team of professional comic book creators who adhered to the house style of the Lantz studio, prioritizing slapstick humor and rapid-fire visual gags. These comics were intended for a juvenile audience and relied on the established character traits of the manic bird, aiming to maintain the brand's visibility during a period when the original theatrical shorts were finding new life through recurring television syndication.
