Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #87

Woody Woodpecker #87 was published in the mid-1950s as part of Dell Comics' long-running Four Color and self-titled series featuring the characters created by Walter Lantz. During this era, Dell held the licensing rights for many prominent animated properties, producing colorful, digest-sized comics intended to capitalize on the widespread popularity of theatrical cartoon shorts. These comics served as an extension of the animation studio's brand, maintaining the zany, high-energy persona Woody developed in his 1940s film appearances.

The interior illustrations and scripts were typically produced by a rotation of anonymous staff artists and writers at the Western Printing and Lithographing Company, which handled Dell’s production. The design aesthetic relied on clean, simplified linework and vibrant flat colors characteristic of the mid-century mass-market comic style. While these issues were primarily considered ephemeral children's entertainment at the time of publication, they have since become touchstones for animation historians documenting the reach of early television and film-to-print cross-media marketing.
