Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #89

Woody Woodpecker number 89 was published in 1961 as part of the long-running Dell Comics series dedicated to the Walter Lantz character. During this era, Dell held the license for many popular animation properties, producing monthly comic books that translated the frenetic energy of the theatrical cartoons into a static, sequential format. This specific issue reflects the mid-century house style of the Western Publishing group, which prioritized family-friendly entertainment and maintained a consistent aesthetic across their animation-based titles.

The character of Woody Woodpecker, created by Walter Lantz and Ben Hardaway, had become a staple of American pop culture by the early 1960s. The comic books were designed to appeal to younger readers who were familiar with the character through television syndication and theatrical shorts. While specific artistic credits for individual issues of this series are often obscured by the anonymous studio-system approach of the time, the designs relied on established model sheets to ensure the visual consistency of Woody and his supporting cast of characters across these lighthearted, episodic adventures.
